25, farmer, lives at the Marlowe farm in Taneytown. Keeper of the Marlowe family history with his brother Ephraim and father Everette.

20, the eldest son of Christian and Mary Marlowe. Proprietor of Fairlight, a mill and farm on Big Pipe Creek south of Taneytown. Married to Hannah Mehring. Hardworking, steady, honest.

Hannah Mehring

19, daughter of George and Elizabeth (dec.) Mehring. Marries Josephus after a long engagement. Quiet, educated, humanitarian.

Jacob Marlowe

18, the youngest son of Christian and Mary. Sympathetic to the South’s cause. Believes in order, control, and ownership of people. Works as a hand at Trevanion.

Christian Marlowe

43, patriarch of the Marlowe family, owns and operates a farm on the outskirts of Taneytown, Maryland, along Bear Branch. Hardworking, calm, fair, well respected in the community.

Mary Marlowe

41, wife of Christian and matriarch of the Marlowe family.  Firm, measured, and always ensuring the family is well cared for and fed.

Molly

31, freed women who stayed at the Marlowe farm. Caring, homely, with an observant sense of humor.

George Mehring

56, patriarch of the Mehring family in Bruceville, Maryland, and is the postmaster. Lives at Myrtle Hill. Father to William, Frederick, Hannah, and Maggie. Well respected in the community

Maggie Mehring

13, the youngest daughter of George and Elizabeth (dec.). Always willing to care for sick or suffering family members. Smart, observant.

Elias Koontz

32, Fairlight foreman and head of the crew that built the farm and mill. Married to Emma, has four children. Educated, well-known, respected.

John Dorsey

25, freed man, Fairlight mill hand. Lives with other freed men in Taneytown and walks to Fairlight. Intuitive, learns quickly, treated as an equal.

Isaac

Twenties (age unknown), worked alongside Dorsey before he was freed. Sold to Trevanion. Tries to escape often to find his wife in NC.

Sheriff William Segafoose

37, Carroll County Sherrif, married to Sarah, lives in Uniontown as a hotel keeper. A Democrat who often runs afoul of Unionists and Know-Nothings. Remains fair as a lawman.

Silas Bixler

34, foreman at Trevanion, widower. Sympathetic to the Southern cause, treats slaves fairly, but will mete out punishment as necessary. Would often bend the Law of Nuisance to benefit Trevanion.

Ash

Hannah’s cur, given to her by Josephus as a Christmas present in 1858. Quiet, faithful, obeys commands. Mostly observes.
